About Pilates

The Pilates Method is a physical and mental conditioning program developed by German born Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. It blends a low impact muscle strengthening program with flexibility exercises. Pilates concentrates heavily on developing core stabilization, which refers to the support given to the spine and pelvis by the deep abdominal and back muscles. Pilates targets the deep postural muscles, by building strength from the inside out.

Pilates also creates a thinking body which teaches people to become more aware of their bodies during movement. By consciously thinking about how our body is moving it will allow economy of movement, reduce physical imbalances so that no muscle is overworked or misused and lead to individual optimal postural alignment.

The Pilates Method focuses on key principles in which every exercise is built around; Concentration, Awareness, Control, Breathing, Centring, Precision, Coordination, Alignment and Flow of movement.
